WireHow to wire it

SMS and email are different jobs. They must not narrate the same panic. If cart SMS and cart email say the same coupon an hour apart, you trained mute on two channels.

Klaviyo SMS gets bolted onto email flows as a louder copy-paste. Then frequency complaints rise and revenue per recipient on email falls because you spent the relationship in a text. Wire channel jobs: what SMS is for (time-sensitive, short, consented), what email is for (proof, education, receipts), suppressions across both, and a consent field you can defend.

The short version

Intern through CEO

Klaviyo SMS gets bolted onto email flows as a louder copy-paste. Then frequency complaints rise and revenue per recipient on email falls because you spent the relationship in a text. Wire channel jobs: what SMS is for (time-sensitive, short, consented), what email is for (proof, education, receipts), suppressions across both, and a consent field you can defend.

  1. 01

Consent is a field. Bought is not consented. A checked box at checkout must map. Country rules are real; they are not a substitute for a job map.

  2. 02

SMS copy is one job, one link, no novel. If you need a story, it is an email. If you need a coupon in both, you are stacking discounts, not 'omnichannel'.

  3. 03

Quiet hours: SMS at 23:10 is how you get blocks. Email can wait too, but SMS is the pain.

  4. 04

Cart: pick a primary channel for the first recovery. The other channel is a later, different message or nothing. Same coupon twice is the leak.

  5. 05

Transactional SMS (shipping) vs marketing SMS must not share a blast list. Shipping truth is a job. A drop announcement is another.

Who

Same system. Three jobs.

Read your row

Intern

What you actually do

Consent tests, path walk, STOP. You are removing duplicate panic, not adding a drop text.

Operator

What you protect

Channels have jobs. Protect caps and consent. Shipping truth vs marketing. No stacked coupons.

CEO

What you refuse to fund

SMS is expensive attention. Stacked with email it is a tax. Job table and consent are the system. Credits are not a strategy.

Wire

How to connect it

Objects, then edges

Klaviyo email profile, SMS profile/consent, age-gated or TCPA-ish consent capture, flow messages by channel, quiet hours, frequency caps, cart/order events, unsubscribe both ways.

  1. 01

SMS consent at checkout or a form → Klaviyo SMS consent true; email consent is separate

  2. 02

Time-sensitive jobs (cart in-window, shipping exception, dunning) may SMS; education stays email

  3. 03

Sending on one channel can suppress the other for that job (not a second cart coupon 40 minutes later)

  4. 04

Unsubscribe/opt-out on SMS does not have to kill email unless they asked — but the UI must not confuse them

Steps

Do this in order

Why, then done when
  1. 01

    Split consent

Email and SMS consent fields both visible on a test checkout profile. Do not mail SMS to email-only.

Why: The fastest way to get numbers blocked is 'they bought so we texted'.

Done when: Email-only test buyer gets no SMS. SMS-opt-in test can.

  2. 02

    Assign jobs to channels

Table: welcome, cart, post-purchase, shipping, win-back, campaign drops. Each row: email, SMS, or neither. No row is 'both same copy'.

Why: Without a table, every flow author adds SMS because they can.

Done when: Printed table. Live flows match.

  3. 03

De-dupe the cart (and any stacked job)

If email cart #1 went, SMS either waits and says something else or does not send. Shared coupon codes tracked so you do not double-discount.

Why: Stacked panic is the complaint in support tickets you are ignoring.

Done when: Path walk: one discount offer in the window, not two channels of the same offer.

  4. 04

    Quiet hours and caps

SMS quiet hours by timezone if you have it, else a conservative window. Cap marketing SMS per week. Shipping can be excepted if true.

Why: A correct cart SMS at midnight is still a block.

Done when: A test at quiet hours does not send marketing SMS.

  5. 05

    Make opt-out honest

STOP works. Profile updates. Do not hide. If they opt out of SMS, email can continue if consented — say so if asked.

Why: Broken STOP is how you get carriers and lawyers. Cleverness is not a channel strategy.

Done when: Test STOP. SMS stops. Klaviyo shows opted out.

What an intern should wire first

Checkout twice: email-only vs SMS opt-in. Confirm consent. Print the job table. Walk a cart path and list every SMS and email. Remove a duplicate coupon. Test STOP. Test quiet hours. Do not write a new SMS campaign.

What a CEO should refuse to fund

A 'SMS growth' vendor or more credits until consent is true and the job table exists. Credits into stacked cart panic buy blocks.

The usual failure

Klaviyo SMS on every default flow. Same 10% off. Night texts. Email-only buyers getting SMS. STOP unclear. Support tickets about too many messages while campaigns still go to 'all SMS'. That is a loud calendar.

The test that proves it

Consent split. Job table matches live flows. Cart not double-couponed. STOP works. Quiet hours hold.

Why

Questions people actually ask

Pushback is normal

SMS converts. Why not add it everywhere?

Because you will spend the list and the email channel together. Jobs and caps are how SMS stays profitable.

Can we use the same flow with an SMS after every email?

That is a copy-paste machine. Only where the table says the second channel has a different job.

What about WhatsApp vs Klaviyo SMS?

Another channel, same rule: one job owner, consent, no stacked coupons. Do not run both as cart panic.

This week

This week: consent split, channel job table, cart de-dupe, quiet hours, STOP test. No new SMS campaign.
